Default Turbo Growl when pulling heavy loads

Hello everyone, this is my first post and I have a possible problem in the works. I have a 2001 F350 4x4 Crew with a diesel 7.3 with 181,000 miles on it with a 4 inch exhaust and upgraded air intake along with a SuperChips tune for off road....I pull a 16000 lb fifth wheel toyhauler and I have a Superchips upgrade that I use to enhance pull power/torque etc with a 4 inch exhaust and air intake upgrades. Recently when hauling the trailer I hear a growl which seems to be from the turbo . I happens ONLY when I want to pull hills or pass. I am thinking it might be the pop off from the turbo....any help will be greatly appreciated!

handyman34450. You gotta tell us more about what you drive. Like the year, engine and the like. Go to the Quick Links tab, just under your login name and fill out your signature. This will give all of us that information so you are not typing it again and again. Thanks

Dave

Completely Stock.

I had a Detroit Diesel 8V92TA in a KW dump truck in 1980. That sucker would put out 425 hp but would never out pull a CAT.

my 7.3 kinda does the same thing with my Bully Dog on tow mode on the hills. When I have the cruse set pulling the jeep on the trailer and hit a hill when the boost get up near 10psi it starts to chatter. I believe it is the waste gate chattering. Because it makes the same noise when letting off the gas with the boost build up, and the wastegate dumps the boost. That is my thinking.

Wicked Wheel will reduce Turbo flutter. Read about it here. http://www.dieselsite.com/wickedwhee...s-instock.aspx

Keeping the RPM's at +/- 2400 helps some too... during a good Pull, with or without a Wicked wheel.

Default Turbo growl???

I have a 2001 F350 4x4 Crew with a diesel 7.3 with 181,000 miles on it with a 4 inch exhaust and upgraded air intake along with a SuperChips tune for off road, the turbo growls when under load with my 40 foot fifth wheel toyhauler which weighs in at 16,000 lbs....any Ideas what is causing the Growl....its sounds like the turbo or maybe the pop off on the turbo????? its seems fine running by itself without weight.....

I know exactly what your talking about. I didn't hear it it I started pulling my posessions across the country. I climbed that crazy hill just as you get in WY on I80. I tipped the scales at 24.5K and as soon as I crested the hill and came out of first the turbo started doing an extra whine. Almost like it had two voices, normal and I GOT A LOT OF BOOST. Thought it was the heavy tow but I mashed the pedal the yesterday and holy crap it's posessed. I need to get under the hood and check the boots. I hope the WG isn't done in.

With a Load.. Altitude.. has a Lot to do with the engine sounds we hear.

The thinner the air, the harder the engine has to work.. intake will sound different, turbo will sound different.. the Whole "Normal" engine sounds we "Normally" hear will sound different.

Not To Worry, It's all working as hard as it can.. at/in the Altitude yer at.

Use yer Gears, based on RPM, Boost and EGT's.. yul be just fine.

@ 18,880 GCVW.. my 7.3 likes 2400 rpm, @ 25psi boost, @ 850* egt, in 4th or 5th.. pulling a grade. MPH is Moot. It's how >Well< you go up the hill.... that kinda thing ?

My .03

Joe
