HydroBoost question

I hope there are no dumb questions here...I got in my truck the other day and noticed that loud whirring noise you get when your power steering is going out. It got louder when I held my foot on the brakes. I realized my power steering resevoir was empty, so I filled it up with ATF. Since then the noise went away in both the steering and brakes. My truck must have a HydroBoost system on it, right? One pump for both systems.

Only thing I've found is let the truck roll slightly when you are trying to turn the wheels. For example, you have just backed out of a parking space and are trying to turn the wheels from facing the space, to facing down the aisle. Take just enough pressure off the brake pedal so the truck just "creeps", this helps a great deal. It seems funny at first, but I've been driving my truck for so long (9 years now) it's second nature now....... I even notice myself doing it when I'm in driving my 07 P71 Daily Driver (and shutting it off at the drive thru, and waiting for the Check Engine light to go off before I start it.......) this is the only thing I found that works.....

I was wondering also. Mine sometimes is tougher to turn when stationary on pavement. So it's a "nature of the beast" type of thing? I'm assuming at least up through '04 the systems are the same?

Nature of the beast.
You can look up the Saginaw power steering pump swap, but the parts are getting hard to find.

I find that just releasing the brake makes the steering easier. It is still not like going down the road...

Yup, they fight each other.
I think you can have the steering gear modified to flow more volume, which can slightly help.
But best bet is a better pump.
Maybe it's psc (pcs?) That has a "kit." Some of the vans had the better pump.
