I was replacing the glow plugs on the drivers side. The first one went fine. On the second one, I loosened it and took out what I thought was the glow plug and it came appart. There is still a metal rod sticking out of the engine where the glow plug is and I cant pull it out! CAN I RUN IT WITHOUT CONNECTING THIS GLOW PULG and Leave the rod sticking out? Any suggestions???:thanks

No, you cannot leave it in there, can you get a vise grips on the rod and work it out? Pulling the head is next. Sorry dude.

The tip is probably swelled or coked off with carbon. Soak it really good with a good quality penetrant (kroil, pb blaster etc etc) and let it sit for several hours. Then see is you can budge it.

Hopefully someone else will chime in here who has had one stuck before, maybe they will be able to give you a tip or some ideas on getting a stuck one loose. Mine threaded right out. But, from my viewpoint I dont see another way around it other than pulling head if you cant get it out through the hole.

If, with all the yanking, twisting, and fussing you do the head does break off, I've heard of guys pulling the injector for that cylinder and fishing the pieces out through the injector bore with a magnetic/claw pickup tool.

I would see if you can get some Mercury Power Tune (it's used for outboard motors) and try it for breaking up any carbon on the remnants of the plug. Use some needle nose vicegrips and try working it out. Good luck & Cheers!

Thanks guys. With all that I couldnt get it to budge. It goes into the shop Monday. I am too injured to mess with it. Auto Trust seems to think they can get it out. I just dont understand how it could be stuck that bad when the tip is much......much smaller that the hole. Auto Trust says that the glow plug DOESNT go directly into the cylinder. That there is some type of warming chamber so the glow plug wouldnt drop in the cylinder even if it loosened up......IS THAT RIGHT??
Thanks again.

nope thats not right.id consider finding another shop as a powerstroke doesnt have a "warming chamber"the glowplugs in a powerstroke go directly into the cylinder so if it falls in it will sit on top of the piston.i bet they are gonna try to do what ive seen and heard people do with the old 7.3 IDIs and 6.2/6.5 chevies, push the glowplug into the prechamber and leave it.even then it will get into the cylinder.
