If it starts after extended cranking, but doesn't smoke more than normal I would look towards the HPOP. It sounds like it is taking longer than normal to build oil pressure. This can be checked with a scan tool looking at the ICP data or with a mechanical gauge. It needs to build pressure...
If the problem comes back an easy way to check for a fuel problem would be to hook up a mechanical gauge an leave it under the hood. When the problem happens stick the gauge under the wiper or tape to the windshield to check the fuel pressure when driving and the engine is under load.
