Well, here's the rest of the story. I replaced the alternator and had the batteries load tested. The batteries checked out OK, so I just replaced the alternator. Worked great - for about a week - then back to the same problem I started with. So I bought another alternator and two batteries...- Jsheds

Electrical problem - radio, gauge, battery light
Swapping out the alternator was no problem, once I figured out how to get the belt off. The tensioner couldn't be in a less convenient place, and it's impossible to see the square hole for the breaker bar. Any tricks to this? I'm going to replace the belt while I'm in there, do I just thread...- Jsheds

I haven't gottena round to working on this yet, but I plugged a voltmeter into the lighter socket and ran the truck. At about 1200 RPM the voltage reaches 17+ volts and the entire dashboard shuts down, back to idle and everything comes back on. I'm going to pull the alternator this week and...- Jsheds

Thanks guys, I figured a bench test was in my future. Can anyone explain why an alternator would cause this erratic problem? I know it's all computer driven, is it the voltage fluctuations that flip out the computer? Jim- Jsheds
