I have a 2017 F250 FX4, Ultimate Lariat with less than 20K miles. This has happened a number of times to me, as well.
I had a bad sensor and it threw the warning to me each time I put it in reverse until I replaced it. The dealer can plug in and tell you within seconds.
I was going to ask the same question. My old ‘10 6.4 didn’t use DEF, but now my ‘17 6.7 does.
