yah, my 00 was doing the same thing and it was the cps, mine also would die when hitting the brake pulling a three axle trailer, wouldn't do it with a two axle trailer. i guess the greater electrical load with the 6 electric magnets was affecting it. this was at the same time ford did the recall...
yah, i bought one from DB Electrical on EBAY, it was cheap, like about $80, and it really spins it over and its been on now about a year with no problems, also got a honda 4-wheeler starter at the same time, its also been good.
yah, don't know anything about recall wire, but when i went to my local ford dealer to buy the brake pressure sending unit they told me it was in recall, they wanted me to wait about two hours so they could do the install, but i told them i'd put it on my self. it took about 10 minutes to install.
i have always just used a test light. one side is hot and the other is switching the glow plug circuit on( i'm refering to the two larger studs), when you turn your key on the stud that's not hot should be now. if it isn't hot then more than likely its not working. the next thing would be check...
