I am looking into putting on a trailer brake controller (Don;t ask why, I don;t want to jinx anyhting). Truck has factory hitch and 4/7 pin hookups on the rear bumper.

Looking under the dash, the only connector I have found, is a gray connector that is just beyond the metal support. It looks like it has 5 pins in it. I can not tell all the wire colors yet.

Should it have some slack in the wires? Its short to get at and tight. It looks like I have to pull at least the radio and maybe the dash to free it up.

This page is the only thing i have found so far with info - Electric Trailer Brake Controllers for Ford Trucks

Are there any other connectors under there that I could mistake for the trailer brake hookup?

Fuses: some of the controllers recommend a 30A circuit breaker or fuse. I looked in the power dist box under the hood- i have fuses for the trailer brakes and lights etc..

Am I good as is or do I need more?

I hit the dealer and see if they have the adaptor for the controller itself...

chances are, there's only going to be one connector on the whole truck that it plugs into.

Here's mine.

The adaptor I got made up for the lack of slack...I think it has 18" or so with it...

Did you buy your truck new? Mine came with a harness pigtail, relay for under the hood, and instructions in the glove box.............

If you want me to, I can go take a peek, it is the same year as yours with same trailer tow package

thanks guys. the connector is the one i found. its WAY up in there behind the dash support.

you guys are also right, the units have a pigtail that plugs into an adaptor harness that will plug into the OEM plug, so no worries on the length.

now the only wrinkle is we are not sure if the trailer is electric only or electric over hydraulic.

as they say, more news at 11...

if the trailer has hydraulic brakes on it you should
see a FLUID RESERVOIR along w/ a brake "master cyl."
on the tongue of the trailer or someplace up front on
the trailer.

Man that brake controller plug under the dash is a real pain to get at. Ford could have put it on the left side of the dash support and it would have been a LOT easier to get to.
My truck didn't come with the two 30 amp fues under the hood needed to activate the controller. We pluged my new toyhauler into the 7 way plug and NO green light! Man was I pissed, it only took a second to find the missing fuses, put them in and I was good to go.
Don't forget to follow your instructions on setting the controller up B 4 you tow.
