Yes you are correct they will tell you that the pan has to be removed and to remove the pan you have to pull the engine. Some guys have had luck just cleaning up around the nut and laying on a thick coating of silicone. Others have been able to remove the nut by running a heavy wire in through the tube hole to keep the internal parts from falling in the pan, keep in mind if you slip and drop something in there you will be pulling the pan for retrieval.
