Had the truck at the shop for a few issues. While there they tested the fuel pump. It tested at 50 at idle and 40 at wot. He siad the it should be at about 60-70 at WOT. What are the normal pressures?? Also, where are the tranny coolers on these trucks?? Any help would be great, Thanks.

The fuel pressure is preset at 46 psi but a lot of guys like to bump it up to around 60 to insure that the injectors get their fill of fuel in the alloted time.

There are two tranny coolers in series. First it goes through the oil to water cooler in the bottom of the radiator and then it goes through the oil to air cooler that's just behing the grill.

ok, thanks, the guy tells me that the fuel pump may need replaced in the near future. How do you bump it up to 60, and can the stock pump do this??

Very easy and it's OK for a stock setup. It's called shimming the fuel pressure regulator. On the FPR is a brass 3/4" cap screw. Remove it. You'll see a spring and a sleeve. Remove the spring from the sleeve and drop in a 3/16" ball bearing and replace the spring in the sleeve. This will increase the fuel pressure.

Is the fuel pump weeping? Is there a pool of diesel in the valley? Increasing the spring pressure in the FPR won't correct a failing pump, but those psi numbers indicate a working fuel pump.

If he is trying to sell you a new pump based on the 50 psi at idle and 40 psi at wot he's just trying to get your money and you should start looking for a more trustworthy mechanic.
