MAX DUALLY Tire Size on 16s

Hey Guys & Gals,

Can anyone tell me if 255/85R16s will work on my dually? Cany let the tires touch. Just looking for something a little larger than the small OEMs on this truck without having to change wheels.

Also, if I go with the 255s on the rear, I would want 285/75R16s for the front to get the same diameter with a wider tire. Has anyone put a tire this size on the front of a F350?

I would think they would touch which is a bad thing as they will rapidly overheat. I have 235s on all four corners of my dually and in the rear have about 1 inch of clearance when the 5th wheel trailer is on and loaded with the race car. I posted about this issue last winter when I had some tires fail on the rear and found the spare was stock sized and the running tires were the 235s. It looked funny as the stock tire did not touch the ground! Anyways, I remember some posts about spacers so those could be used to move the wheels apart some for even larger tires. You can also search the tire specs to see what the cross section dimension is and compare that to get an idea of how much trouble it will be.

Thanks for the info.

I presently have 1.5 inches clearance between the rear tires. The 255/85s would be 0.7 inches wider, so I would lose about half of that clearance. Of course, one would have to make sure that they dont touch, even under load.

Just thought someone would have driven this to ground by now.

Also, Im concerned about the 285/75s for the front. They would be the same diameter as the 255/85s but about 2 inches wider than the OEMs. Would they drag the fender well----Are they too wide for the OEM rim?

They will touch, as .7 x2 = 1.4"
and yes, a 285 is too wide for a six inch wheel.

I'm pretty sure one of the guys in my club is running 255s with no spacer. I'll check Saturday. I'm running 315s with a spacer on stock wheels. No problems (related to tires).
315s rub the leaf spring at full lock but not the fenders (unless I'm turning down a hill while braking).

You can do 265/75 without spacers.

A 265/75 is about max you can do without a spacer, they are about 10.5" wide. But if you haul heavy loads make sure you inflate to about 75-80 psi. I run 235 at 40psi and yesterday I had a bed full of sand and my tires were touching.

And why will they rapidly overheat if they touch?
