4th Turbo Replacement

My 2005 X with 22k miles looks like it will need it's 4th turbo. :dunno

The variable vanes keep getting stuck and along with low boost the check engine light comes on. Last month the Ford dealer took the turbo apart, cleaned it and reassembled.

Everything work fine until a few days ago. I accelerated after stopping from a red light and the turbo didn't whistle as loud as it should. The check engine light came on.

What the heck is going on here? When I do drive the truck I will get on it meaning I don't drive like a grandma.

The truck stays in a semi-conditioned garage at night. I drive it at least once a week for about 60 miles (30 miles to work and 30 back) and at least 4 times a year to NY which adds 700 miles to the odometer. We also use it for our bi monthly visit to WalMart (about 60 miles round trip) to stock up on supplies (4 kids eat A LOT!)

Am I not driving the truck enough or is there something wrong with the turbo? Could the HPOP be the problem by not providing enough oil to the turbo? Oil is changed every 5k miles and at 20k miles I went to Rotella synthetic.

Will the CCV mod help in that it won't allow oil into the turbo thus preventing coking on the variable vanes?

How do you stop the variable vanes from rusting? The mechanic told me he put antiseize on the variable vanes to prevent rust.

The only mods are Walker BTM muffler, Accufab elbow and 07 finned diff cover. I use diesel kleen (gray bottle in summer, white in winter) with every fillup. I have never used a computer programmer of any kind.

Any suggestions? :confused:

I'm having the same problem with my truck, only mine is currently at the dealer receiving Turbo #5. Service manager says Ford is having a lot of problems on trucks that are not driven much, which is my problem. The only thing I can say is we need to drive our trucks more, but with the cost of fuel, who wants to?:dunno Maybe sooner or later a smart aftermarket company will make replacement inner parts for our turbo's out of stainless. I know I'd buy one.

That was the original problems with the 6.0L.

They were built and sat on lots untill sold. That is where the term LOT ROTT came from.

Two things that will cause problems with the turbo.

1. Not driving (letting it set for a week or more)

2. Getting it hot and lots of black smoke from a hot tune. (the soot will build up binding up the vaines)

mine sits for weeks sometimes...I work from home and dont drive it or it
gets run to the airport or home and ive never had an issue.

at mikes current turbo exchange rate & miles he's goin' thru a turbo every
5500 miles !?!

Bob, did the dealer give you any recommendations on how to avoid the turbo from rusting?

Mike, they said to drive it more often and to use fuel additive. Which I do use Ford Cetane boost in every tank, and I have been since the factory Turbo was replaced. Ever since I got a Company truck, my truck sits for weeks on end. So I know what my problem is, I think I'm going to try to take my truck to work at least once a week to keep the vanes from sticking. How about you, did your dealer say anything that would help? Also, my truck was washed and the dealer never charged me the $100 Deductible. Helps to be friends with the owner I guess.:sly

Mine will be replaced on Tuesday.

I drive mine at least once a week for 60+ miles. The truck is also kept in a garage.

I always use DieselKleen.

We will see what happens next week.

Question should these low usage 6.0 turbos have one of the oil pre-charge systems? The system for pre-charge starts to pump oil when the key is in ON posistion or before the engine starts.
