Hello, I 'm lost with this old engine. I have a 1990 7.3 with water in the oil and oil in the water. I had the heads resurfaced and replaced the o-rings in the oil cooler. Does anyone know of another thing to check or replace?

Good Question, I can't think of any thing else that it could be. It has been a few years since I owned an IDI. The only thing that I can come up with is the Oil Cooler itself. They are available on eBay. Good Luck.

Dave - I see we are almost neighbors. I live across the bay near Palo Alto.

Thanks Dave. I will swap the whole oil cooler out and see if that works. I did live across the bay but recently moved out to Fresno area. I did enjoy the weather there though.

Well then ? WE'RE almost neighbors ! I live in Lemoore.

X2 on the Oil Cooler. I went thru 2 of them on my 91 IDI, in 260K. IRC, seems it had to do with the Coolant PH... even with the additive. Lots of improvements in that area (Antifreeze) these days.. you may want to look into Coolant types.. after you R&R the cooler ??

Well, Hello bud. I actually live here in lemoore too. Small world I guess.lol I live off hanford armona road near the hwy 41. where do you live at?
I'll change that oil cooler out and see what happens. So you think the internal cores are the problem since I replaced the o-rings already?

here's my problem with blaming the oil cooler for the coolant int he oil.
coolant reaches 16psi max. motor oil is at 7psi minimum and 40psi max. a bad oil cooler often will leak oil into the cooling system. only when a motor is shut down, does the coolant have a chance to find it's way into the crankcase.
cavitation otoh, does dump coolant directly into the crankcase.
just food for thought......

Can't say fer shur it's yer cooler cores.. just pass'n on my exsperiences with my 'ol IDI. Have you ever pressure tested the cooling system ??

Good Call Joe. Pressure testing the radiator is what you want to do before turning wrenches. The possibility of cavitation of the block does exist. Was this motor good when you got it?? Cavitation is when to block gets small holes in the cylinder walls due to the small bubbles bursting in the coolant.

When I tor the heads off i didn't see any signs of coolant washing out the cylinders. All cylinders looked the same with slight black buildup coated on the head and piston tops. Is there a way to tell the difference between a bad oil cooler and holes in the block when pressure testing? If holes are in the block, what option if any are there.
