I started reloading last winter to lower costs and get away for a while in the garage. I bought the RCBS complete Rock Chucker Supreme setup at Cabelas during the holidays and it was 25% off or something like that. Came with one of the reloading manuals so all I had to do was get a case cleaner (also 25% off), some media, a case trimmer and some die sets. I would recommend the carbide sets for handguns as they will last forever and once setup never have to change. I also bought a couple of additional manuals just to double check the powder weights.

your slow-er shotgun powders are best for the heavy-bullet .45's

Unless you have a compact, like a Combat Commander, then you would want to speed up the burn a bit to "relatively" reduce muzzle flash..

use like Blue-Dot, Herco, 800X, Longshot, etc
for shorter barrels & lighter loads: Red-Dot, 700X, Clays, AA#2

I pretty much use VihtaVouri in loads I do for myself. In my .45 I use 7.0gr N350 and a WW primer

I have been loading Winchester 231 in my 9mm. It is a good general purpose pistol powder. Not known as a fast powder.

actually, 231 is the second-fastest burning powder Olin makes.

it's a tad faster than HP38 and a helluvalot faster than Red Dot

Olin does NOT make Winchester powders, JL. Hodgdon does. This is a recent change, according to their "under construction" website. Olin is known for Ball Powder and 231 is a Ball Powder. Go figure.
