I don't mean to start a debate here, I've done all the research, Read all the posts, Well most of them.... But here goes.... I'm thinking of purchasing a tuner for my 2005 6.0. Now mind you, I don't want a race truck, but a little more power and torque would be nice. So 2 questions, What's out there for my application towing/hauling (No racing) dependable worry free tuner. Would I be living with a hand grenade? I already have after market gauges to monitor whats going on.
Thanks for your response....:thumbs

my suggestion would be the sct tuner with custom tune or just a plain Superchips Cortex that can be used in any ford. The Cortex on tow mode (40hp) does work good for towing.

You may lift the heads on your truck if you don't install head studs. This will blow the head gaskets and that is a lot of work to replace. Do a search for ARP studs for more.

Dave and Campby9 Thanks for the reply, I know of the heads lifting up on some trucks.... but if I'm careful and not hard on my truck should it still be a problem? How about some of you guy's who have been runn'in a tuner for awhile without any problems chiming in here.:chat

Possibly...that is the best answer you can get.

There are bone stock trucks out there with head gasket issues, so it's really hard to say for sure.

Personally, I have an SCT, I usually run either the tow tune or sometimes the street tune which I got from DJ's...no longer in buisness:dizzy...but so far...knocking on wood...I have had no issues.

I don't drive it real hard, I do like to get in it from time to time though just because it is fun. I would like to upgrade to the ARPs, and I probably will sometime, but right now I've got other things that I want to waste my $ on.

I've had a Bully Dog- Power pup in my SD that I never take off of performance but I do watch my EGT's.

I also have the Bully Dog Power Pup on my truck. I have had it on there for 15K miles or so and no problems yet but the head gaskets were just done prior to me buying the truck. The head gaskets were done at around 50K miles and the truck was bone stock at that time. Cheers.

I have the Edge Juice platinum I like it, some don't. I, like you, was looking for better performance and better milage. The Edge has a couple of items I liked: in cab monitor that I can change on the fly, turbo cooler, adjustment for wheels and tires, set point alarms and code reading. Just my two cents no debate.

I have an E-con by Hypertech, It is 50 States Legal and will not add a lot of power to my truck BUT. It is great to use for my Standard at 1800RPM to 2000RPM. I use to pull my trailer stock and at every hill the torque would climb to 100% with the trotlle hardly pushed, and at normal flat driving it was stready at 60%. Well now with the programer on A, I hit the hills at 60% load and it climbs to 70% in the climb and I still can push the trottle in proportion up to 100%, and gain speeds in the hill. I never have the need to rev my truck past 2500 RPM. I would never pulll again unless I have the programer on the truck. I never found any heat gain at my Pyro so far. On stock the truck had no torque to drive on Overdrive in hilly areas, with the programer I love the torque and the feeling on Overdrive. It is great also on Drive gear as the RPM are at 2500 in the larger hills. My truck can spin on all gears in the city and sometimes its scary to rush off the lights as the rear gets loose. not bad for $329.00 period. I have everything Std on my truck. Also Notice my Audio video system that I have installed for less then $600. and that is with cams back of the truck and trailer,

Remove your EGR up-pipe, mod it to bypass the EGR cooler, reinstall. Get a custom tuned SCT and have fun. Either the heads will lift or not, there is no magic time or way when it will occur.
