I have come across two excursions. They both have the same features. one is a 2000 and the other is a 2002. The 2000 only has 115K on it and had been used to tow a big camper. The 2002 has 215K has never towed much. It was owned by a sales rep who drove between el paso and dallas a lot. My mechanic has worked on the 2002, replace water pump, small stuff. The 2002 has had synthetics run in it most of its life. I wanted to get some opinions as far a problems or benefits to certain year models. Thanks for the help in advance. oh yeah, both have 7.3L. I wouldn't think of buying a gas one.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this or not.

I would lean towards the 00' due to the lower mileage and Forged connecting rods. The 02's have been know to break a rod from time to time.

Well, the 2000 didn't work out. I am going this weekend to pickup the 2002.

It is what is most likely to break in the 2001 2002 trucks. The only reason I say that is that ours broke 300 miles from home and 5000 miles out of warranty. It required a TOTAL transmission rebuild in a town I was not familiar with, since the Ford dealer wanted to keep it for a week or more, while we stayed there.

Heck no, I am not bitter. Probably the only major complaint I have ever had with any of my Ford trucks. If the tranny has been rebuilt, you will probably be okay.

IMHO PMR's aren't really that big of a downfall. You just have to stay under the 400hp mark, and your safe.

I have 2 01's with PMR's.

Plus, It takes big pockets to get over the 400hp mark, if your just looking at simple bolt on's, you'd be ok with PMR's. (well, not that deep, but if you want over 400hp on a 7.3, your shooting for 500hp, and that DOES take deep pockets)

AN 00 used as a tow rig, vs a 02 thats been a daily driver with no serious work, and knowing the maint history of the 02?

To me thats a no brainer, the 02 without a second thought. Do yourself a favor though, and give the tranny some love. Worked or not, the tranny leaves some to be desired.

I agree. I picked up the 02 excursion this weekend. I love it. Ya the trannys on these definitely leave some to be desired.
