This is a VERY COMMON problem with ESOF (Electronic Shift On the Fly). It is usually caused by a vacuum leak. Pull off both front wheels and carefully inspect the vacuum line going to the knuckle, the thing that holds the hubs. The vacuum line may have cracked or broken off of the fitting going to the hubs (they are vacuum operated).

Usually the first thing that goes that causes your truck's 4x4 not to engauge is the air hose going to each hub. You can easily see them as they sorta follow the brake lines. The hoses become cracked with age and then will not allow enough vacume to activate the hubs. You can replace them without even removing your wheels with any tubing for a few bucks from Home Depot.
