Just got back from my trip to Northern Vermont and on the way up towing my 32' trailer going up a hill I heard a little pop then a woosh of air and my turbo psi went down to under ten and little to no power. I pulled it over and looked over the turbo area and did not see anything. I did have a problem once before where the blue hose popped off the turbo, But I fixed that with a new hose and clamps and some RTV. I looked all around the turbo and cannot find a leak but I can sure hear it when the truck is under load.
I made it the rest of the way with the trailer with an obvious power loss and on some of the bigger hills a little black smoke, but temperatures were good and oil pressure was good. I drove the truck back home to CT. without trailer and she did fine but the same thing on some of the hills with an obvious lack of turbo psi. Any input would be a big help, I am hoping I dont have to replace the turbo because I am sure that will be a big ticket. I plan on bringing it to my local ford dealer tomorrow or tuesday. Thanks:dunno

It sounds like you have a tear in one of the boots, the plastic CAC tube, or one end of your intercooler may have popped apart. Check them all closely.

And just for everyones info, the first time I popped a boot off the turbo, I bought a new boot and it was fine for a year then popped off also, so this time I sprayed some starting fluid on the hose and on the turbo to dissolve the oil residue that was on them and it's held up fine for a year now.

Noticed a similar issue on my '06 a couple of days ago while hauling a heavy trailer load of lumber. Going up hills it seemed down on power but the boost gage was sitting up around 30 psi. As soon as I lift the pressure on the gas pedal I could hear a scraping noise (about 3 bursts of sound) coming from under the hood and the boost gage dropped way down to a few psi. Sort of sounded like a blowoff valve but only on lifting the pedal. I was able to recreate it every time I tried. I have never heard that sound before. My CEL light is on so I took it to the dealer this morning to look at. Just got a call from them and they say the turbo is not working right and needs to be taken off and cleaned - sounds to me like it is coked up with soot or something?? The good news is that it falls under the pollution equipment warranty so is covered by Ford.

Anybody here have any more info about this problem??

6 year old boots. Hmmmm

Sometimes, on a visual inspection, the boots will look completely normal.. but under boost pressure, there can be a leak.. from a small split. It doesn't take much of a leak either.. to loose boost psi.

Hopefully FORD will fix it under Warranty.. be sure and tell them.. what you've told us ?

I recently had the same issue or a variant of it on a trip from NC to FL, i was towing a 23ft travel trailer and up and down on the hills, check engine light went on, pulled over once over the hills. checked under the hood and had no leaks or tears, heard a slight noise as if it was a blow off, not alot though. took it in to a ford dealership in GA and they told me that the turbo was possibly dirty. continued again and lost some turbo power on some hills. then the small wrench came up on my display and they also told me i have turbo issues. I am taking it in soon to be checked out since i am at home now.

rgjcc1, Please fill out your signature by going to the USER CP on the Blue Line, above next to FORUMS. Click on Edit Signature and tell us what you drive and where you live. This will help us better help you. Saves lots of typing in answering the question of "What do you drive?"

Sure sounds like a hole in the boots somewhere. I have seen this on the "pete" a couple of times. The "pop" noise, then the inspection to no avail. But everytime somebody would find a small hole blown into one of the boots in a tough place to get to. Check those boots very carefully, squeeze em, pull on em, feel all around with your hands. Bet the hole will turn up.

Do you guys ever make and use a boost leak tester so you can pressurize the the system?

It is really the most effective and easiest way to find any leak.
