I was in NY during the recent Xmas snow storm that dumped 22 inches of snow. I was driving back to my parents house when there was only 12-14 inches of snow on the ground so my 05 Excursion handled it very well.

As soon as I got home I tried to pull my mothers Honda Accord out of the driveway as she had gotten stuck. Unfortunately only one front tire and one rear tire turned and they were slipping real bad. It took me over an hour to get her out. I have Nitto Terra Grappler tires with plenty of meat on them. I know they are not real snow tires but they are better than regular driving tires.

Has anyone installed a locker of some kind in the rear end or a spool in the front end to get a "true" four wheel drive?

A lot of the Moab guys do that..
On snow and ice, however, you're going to have problems with controlling the handling..

X2

We had an 83 F-150 with LS 4:10's on both ends. This was not aftermarket lockers it was stock LS.

On snow, or other slick roads. In the country on a crowned road, in a straight line take-off, the truck would slide straight sidways until one side of the truck was in the ditch and could get traction and then it would move. Took some practice to drive the truck, and it did not like to turn in 4x4. But once I got another 4x4 and it was a 1 legged front, I was disapointed.

a good LS/locker in rear and a selectable locker (ARB-air locker) in front. this way you can have both front tires helping when needed. not cheap though....JMO

The best solution is is E lockers front and rear. For easiest results install a lunchbox locker in the front and a limited slip in the rear.

With over 20 years of off road experience I would advise you NOT to put a 'hard' locker such as a Detroit or EZ lock/LocRite in the front end of a street driven truck. You WILL regret it!! I would advise using a Detroit Tru Trac of a Dana electric locker, it can be turned on and off as needed, in the front. I have used a Detroit Locker in the rear on street trucks for years with ZERO problems but again a Tru Trac or electric locker would work just as well. Randy's Ring and Pinion, Randy's Ring & Pinion. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

But a hard locker is a non issue since we can run our front axles free with hubs. So the locker only comes into effect when you lock the hubs.
