I've had trouble with my fuel filter leaking, which lead to my running out of gas this morning. After refueling and starting, my 02' 7.3 is really idling rough. I plan to have it towed to the shop in the morning, but thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas/suggestions as to what is wrong.

Thanks in advance for your input!

First thing with a diesel is to NEVER refer to fuel as GAS. It may seem like a small item, but it is more important than that. Since you ran out of FUEL, you probably have air in the filter and lines. The normal thing it to drive it to get the air out of the lines. Try driving it for 50 miles to see if it clears up.

Def air in the system. Just drive it, it will more than likely clear out.

if its that bad, you could also hook a piece of hose up to your fuel filter drain line and put a pan under it. go start the struck and let it run for a bit and open the fuel filter drain. watch and see if there are air bubbles in the line and shut the valve when they go away. that might help

Good catch on the GAS part Dave. Hate I missed a chance to poke the new guy. :D

Did that clear it up bloomingdale? Personally, mine gets even CLOSE to 1/4 tank and I fill up.

Good point Nevr, you never want to run out of fuel. It is very hard on the injectors and hard to start when you do. Try to keep at least a 1/4 tank of fuel at all times.

X3

As Dave sez.. A small item but should be mentioned.. One More Time ?

IF we, in normal conversation, normally use the word GAS.. in stead of DIESEL FUEL, or FUEL (?) If a wife, girlfriend, buddy, neighbor, relative.. or anyone else ever needs to drive, or barrow our truck (?)..... and we say: SURE..;tu... jus' put some GAS in it........ when yer dun.

That might/probably be.. EXACTLY what they'll do.:eek:

Run'n these things outa DIESEL FUEL, or FUEL.. is One Thing... Draining, changing out the filter(s), flushing, reprimeing and purging air & GAS... outa these things... is a Whole Nuther GIANT PIA. Not to mention what DAMAGE could occur.. if it (the GAS) isn't caught in time. (by a unknowing person ?)

Very Important to use the Right Termanology. Ya GOTA Talk the Talk.

Small Item, but can lead to a Big Item.

Joe

(OBTW bloomingdale.. the leak 'round the filter.. could be the Fuel Filter Drain Valve O rings leaking)
