hey guys, love the site... my question is about an oil leak in my 97 f250.. truck wouldnt start the other day and i got on the site and diagnosed the problem as a camshaft sensor that was bad... I replaced it and the truck fired right up and I felt like a hero for about 6 seconds till i realized oil was literally pouring out from above the backside of the starter.. tried to move the truck out of the way and the rpms were erratic and check engine light came on and truck shortly stalled out after that...Does it sound like the high pressure oil pump?? any help would be great:confused:

That sounds more like a leak and not the HPOP. I am not the 7.3 expert around here, so someone will chime in on this.

I'll give it a shot till the experts get here. Check your oil dipstick tube where it enters the pan. Saying that since it comes out near the starter. Most other leaks I have heard of come out from the back of the engine from the valley....IE HPOP leak, rear seal.

since you say from above the backside of the starter I'm going to take that to be that to be in the neighborhood of the trans dipstick if you have an automatic transmission.

Depending on the slope the truck was sitting on when you noticed the oil pouring would help determine where the oil would flow and how high you need to start looking.

There are several places to start looking for leaking oil in high volumes from the engine.
1st and foremost make sure it was oil, diesel fuel with engine grime looks very much like oil. so check the oil level now it should be somewhat low

The order I'd start checking things next is
Turbo pedestal o-rings
high pressure oil lines or fittings.
HPOP
high pressure rail plugs @ back of head

Given the location of the HPOP it is relatively easy to check for a leak they do not fail often leaking oil into the valley to allow it to roll off the back of the engine. I point out the angle the truck was sitting at when you noticed the leak because if it was listed with the driver's side down lower and you noticed oil on the passenger's side then you are likely looking at the oil galley plugs not anything in the valley of the engine.
