I know there are some Photography buffs on here. My Wife wants a new Digital Camera for Christmas. What should I look for?

Price isn't a major concern. My Wife is pregnant, so I can't get her the usual gifts,(clothes, etc). So I have to get creative this year.:sly

Ok, that says a lot, she wants a new Digital Camera to take a lot of baby pictures.
I would get one that under $200.00 that's easy to use and is easy to download
on to the PC.

Mostly what Doug says.... it really depends on how much of a Photo bug she is... I have around 10 grand invested in photo equip... or should I rephrase... I have invested close to 10 grand in my WIFES photo equipment... Shes a Canon SLR nut... I would recommend any of the point and shoots by the "good" names in camera equip... ie Canon, Nikon, Olympus just to name a few.... the higher the Mega pixel the better the saturation, the better the pix.... digital is different than film... using my wifes mode of thinking.... Film captures what is there... Digital interprets what is there... if you think she's going to want to expand on the picture side of life look for any of the big names in an SLR, you can in most cases always use the lenses on new bodies as she expands her knowledge, and skill set.

I've long since been a fan of Olympus point & shoot cameras, they seem to have better optics than their counterparts in the same price range, and stand up rather well (I still have and occasionally use the 35mm I had when I was a young boy scout) I'm still shooting a 7mp Olympus Camedia C-60 and for how we take and use digital pictures is more than enough provided you stay within the optical zoom range. 4x6 prints are no different than a 35mm print and 5x7's can be questionable based on the subject and exposure settings. On screen viewing all pictures are more than adequate.

Most of the pictures I've taken since my daughter was born 3.5 months ago have been with my iphone as that is plenty good for sending to the grandparents.

People seem to be moving away from cameras and going to iPhones and other phones with cameras. It is with us most of the time, and are handy. I use a Digital SLR for most of my photos. My phone's camera is for unexpected events, like a car accident.

We have a Sony that takes great pictures but I don't like having to use the cable to download pics. Get a camera with an SD card. Most computers have the SD card slot and it makes downloading a little easier.

All good points. Nowadays? Just get what ever. I'm serious. My wife's phone ( when you put them on a computer monitor) are as sharp as my $2000 camera. No lie. Talk about disgusted. The better cameras give you alot more options, but if she's just taking snapshots? Go cheap. The guts of everything electronic, as far as pictures go, has come such a long way, unless you do this for a living, just use whatever looks good to you. I say this because there is actually a photographer that uses ONLY an iphone and he's making $$$. Good $$$.

Try this guy KenRockwell.com: Photography, Cameras and Taking Better Pictures

He is NOT brand exclusive and does not get paid for his reviews.
