Dies in reverse

My 99 7.3 dies when the truck has warmed up when i put it in reverse. If its cold it backs up fine. It is auto. I have a video if i can get it to post up

Torque converter is drifting. (Trying to lock the clutch). Check the fluid level. if it's low this will happen.

If the fluid level is good. Then you have an internal leak or pressure issue. The tranny will have to be pulled to repair the issue.

Do you have 1st gear? Its sounding like the clutch pack came a part. 1st and reverse are in the same clutch pack if I remember right. Don't try to drive it, you'll do more damage then you want to pay for.

It drives fine forward its just backing up that it does it

Third and reverse are shared (direct drum).


There is an internal leak in the tranny. What is happening when placed in reverse, fluid is leaking into the converter clutch circuit. When this happens the clutch will try to apply.
