I keep putting this off because I am lazy...but also ignorant. Maybe you can help with the 2nd problem?

The ignition switch needs to be replaced, for sure, for a number of reasons. I know how to remove it (disc. batts, key in and ON, push little nub in the hole below, pull the switch out).

And there's plenty of options for a new ignition switch online, from $25-$75. Mine is not electronic in any way so it's on the cheap end.

My confusion is in regards to the keying. I'd like to retain the existing keys, otherwise, the doors and the switch don't match anymore, right? I read someplace that a locksmith is the best way to go, in that case, and don't show up at their door with a new switch but have them get the switch for you.

I'd appreciate your advice folks.

I recently replaced the ignition switch on my daughters truck.. same issue about the keys Rich.

Took the old, and the new switch to a local Locksmith.. he matched the New switch pins/tumblers (?) to the Old switch.. and keys. Works Perfect. Took about an hour.

Well I pulled the cover off from behind the wheel, removed the switch, cleaned everything out, greased the little engager on the back side of the switch, and put back together. No more dinging with key out.

Stopped at a lock shop first, and the gent told me I'd be wasting money swapping the switch...it's the engager or whatever it is engaging that may more likely be the culprit. Nice guy.

Now if I could only figure out why my parking brake engaged light on the dash doesn't come on; that is making my Aux Idle Controller not allow to be activated (I think). I've changed the switch, checked the ground. Out of ideas. Thoughts?

Thanks, I did that too. Finally...found a blown fuse that I swear I'd checked before! Now it is all good, except of course the original problem (dinging going on after key pulled) is coming back. Aw well, it's seen 15 years of near daily use.
