Turbo pedestal leak

Apparently this is a pretty common issue and mine is seeping to the point now that it is actually dripping off the bell housing, which I cannot stand. So I am going to attempt this myself, I watched a youtube video and it looks fairly straightforward but I'm sure there are probably some tips that I should be aware of. In addition are there any worthwhile upgrades or additional items I should/could service while I'm into this to save digging in to the same parts again down the road? I thought I read somewhere about a pedestal upgrade??? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

BTW the mileage is about 230 on an 01 SD.

I did mine many years ago and can't remember the exact details. I do remember the rear pedestal bolt being difficult to get to. At the bottom of my webpage has turbo pictures that may help see the o-rings and pedestal parts you are dealing with. Mine is a 97 but similar set up.

I replaced the turbine to a wicked wheel, when my turbo croaked many years ago. From memory, and looking at the details in my signature...

1. Got a pedestal without the exhaust backpressure valve hole
2. Added a wastegate controller that is mechanical.
3. I also recall the pedestal bolt in the back to be a PIA. I believe you need new bolts, since it is some sort of crush thread (1 time use) design. I believe I had some problems with at least one backing out initially.

I think putting the O-ring in and setting the equipment down on it was the toughest to feel confident it was not twisted or messed up.

I would recommend replacing leaky up pipes with bellowed ones. I also put on a Wicked Wheel, High pressure oil crossover line, fuel return line, manifold reinforcing ring, new manifold and boost tube boots and clamps. I also wrapped the up pipes, downpipe and post intercooler boost tube with fiberglass wrap. The up and down pipes to keep heat in and boost tube to keep heat out.

What kind of a job are the up pipes, I haven't looked into it much but some dude on another forum was saying it's best to pull the trans out? I'm not crazy about that if it's not really required, any feedback is appreciated.

I did the up pipes when I had the transmission out so I can't comment on how difficult that would be with it in.

Not so bad. Some manual dexterity required to bolt to exhaust manifold from underneath. I thought remounting turbo to collector was harder. First prefit the collector that comes with the bellowed tubes to make sure it fits properly. Don't tighten the up pipes until you get the turbo on the collector so you can have more wiggle room.
