Fuel Tank Hose

I cut the rusted out bed off of my 06 F250 and while I was poking around I found this hose coming out of the front of the fuel tank and connecting to a metal pipe in the frame rail. After running along the frame rail it looks like the metal pipe again connects to another section of hose coming out of the rear of the fuel tank.

A couple of questions on it:
1. What's it for.
2. Any reason why I couldn't just replace it with a length of fuel line. I don't understand the need for the metal pipe in the middle.

No responses yet? Wish I had information for you. I'm still learning about my truck. If the line just reroutes back to the tank and nowhere else it sounds like a type of breather. I would think as long as the routing stays the same just replace it with a material that won't deteriorate with diesel fuel. See if there is a replacement from Ford maybe.

Yeah, no reply yet. I went ahead and just replaced it with some fuel line I had. The parts that were there were completely destroyed and the truck was working fine so I'm not sure how important it all is.

I believe it's part of the fuel vapor system.
