Would I benefit much with a tune for my truck?
I know there are a lot of claims out there, But do they work?

What are some of the best?

I don't really want to get into changing the exhaust system.
Truck is mainly used for towing a fifth wheel.

If there is nothing wrong with your EGR or DEF system don’t mess with it. As soon as you get around 70-80 thousand miles your EGR and DEF system will start to act up. Its money money to get them fixed. Cheaper to buy a tuner and do away with the junk government system. Take your EGR and Exhaust off and you will feel the real deisel power your truck has. No more over priced DEF that clogs your system.

Was a non believer and now totally deleted and love the differences. The tow tune allows me to get 17 pulling my camper and boat. Actual compared mileage to gallons used at fillup.

I would do that if I didn't have to pass an emission test in Illinois

You have to pass emission tests up there? Is that some federal EPA thing we don't need to worry about down here in central IL?

How is that stock exhaust system holding up to the road salt?

Modifying the exhaust is actually against federal law. Meaning everyone is covered by it. The difference is some areas are more lenient than others.

Yes!
I think it is a Fed. mandate for major metro. areas.
I do know they will not let you renew your plates w/o passing smog test.
They just started with diesel's a few years ago.
