My early '99 has 350k miles on it and it has always been VERY reliable. I've never had to do anything major to it, but I did replace the injectors (Swamps split shots) about 3 years ago.....not out of necessity, but by choice.

Over the last year or so, the cranking time has become extended (sometimes taking more than 5 seconds until it fires up), and that's beginning to take a toll on my batteries that are less than 2 years old.

Once it starts, I have no other issues. The extended crank time seems to be the only problem and symptom.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a check valve in the HPOP that supposed to keep the oil in the reservoir? If so, could that be my issue?

I'd really like to troubleshoot and repair this myself. Now that hunting season is here, I can't really do without my truck. Plus the only guy that I have ever trusted to work on my stuff moved out of state a few years ago.

Sorry. I'm a gas hot rod guy. I'm still learning about diesels.

Regarding the HPOP, is there a way to prime it before starting the truck? I want to say I've heard of someone mentioning a way to prime it after a rebuild. If there is I would try to prime it before the first start. If the truck fires right up then at least you know where to look.

I checked it and it was nearly full........maybe a half inch (definitely less than 1") from the top. Would it not being COMPLETELY full be an issue? "SHOULD" it be COMPLETELY full?

Thanks for the response.

That's full. I was just answering his question.
Does it start faster with it plugged in?

I assume you mean with the block heater plugged in? I haven't tried that (but I will tonight) but it has the long cranking issue even when its 90* outside, so I really dont think that plugging up the heater would matter. I just replaced the glow plugs (used Bosch) and valve cover harnesses when I replaced the injectors about 3 or 4 years ago. I only use it for towing these days, so it has less than 10k miles since I did all of that. SURELY the glow plugs are still okay.

Left it plugged up overnight and it was definitely warm because I could feel the heat, but it still cranked more than 10 seconds before it fired.

I wouldn't recommend Bosch glowplugs. But you're right, at those temps it shouldn't matter.
How fast is it actually cranking?
Do you have a monitor? Watch ipr and icp.
