Biodiesel is considered as a blended diesel fuel. The person that produces the blended diesel fuel, outside the bulk transfer/terminal system (blender), is liable for the tax which is imposed under IRC section 4081(b) upon sale or removal. Blended diesel fuel is any mixture of diesel fuel, with respect to which tax has been imposed and any other liquid(such as kerosene)which no tax has been imposed. The number of gallons of blended diesel fuel subject to the tax, is the difference between the total number of gallons of blended diesel fuel removed or sold, and the number of gallons of previously taxed diesel fuel used to produce the blended diesel fuel. An exclusion from tax on the "blended taxable fuel" mixture is provided in Treasury Regulations section 48.4081-1(c)(1)(ii) for minor blending if: during any calendar quarter the removal or sale of the mixture in aggregate by the blender is less than 400 gallons. The IRS Form is 720 and publication 510.

55 gals should yield 275 gals of bio-D, which works out to about 54 cents a gallon.

oops, forgot Lye. A pound of lye should make about 24 gallons of bio-d (plus or minus depending on titration). So you'd need about 10-11 pnds of lye to make the 275 gallons of bio-d out of your 55 gallon drum of methanol.

Should work out to about 70 cents a gallon to BREW your own.

$2.72 per gallon for methanol (98.9% pure) and $0.50 per pound for lye.

Final cost per gallon would be $0.56 per gallon.

I'm trying to locate a 300 gallon storage tank and a 500 gallon mixing tank, but I start getting materials.

Count me in! After we get moved and settled in we look towards to setting up our own BD production,maybe even co-op with a few other friends in the area

I've been running a 6.9 on homebrew for several years (about to get a second and nicer 6.9 on Monday! Yippee!).

I haven't even had a hose leak in all that time, didnt' change anything, didn't see any filter clogging, etc. It's pretty warm in winter where I am (northern california) but I haven't seen any cold weather problems starting my truck, even when other people have some trouble on biodiesel. I have a 12V heater that I think was stock on this truck, and I think it gives me a few more degrees of leeway before cold weather hits.

Methanol is a hazardous material by DOT standards. You can legally haul up to 1000 pounds in a truck without having to have a CDL or run placards. That means two drums. Same for NaOH and KOH.... under 1000 pounds- no problems.

You should have the material safety data sheets in the cab of the truck. If you are a business, there are all sorts of rules such as filling out a bill of lading, emergency response numbers, etc.

By the way, I own a small chemical company and design industrial cleaning chemicals for a living. Ironically, the caustic and methanol for biodiesel are the most dangerous ingredients in my building!

I'm putting the finishing touches on my WVO filtration and about to start assembling my my reactor soon after. I have four 55-gallon drums in a row against a wall. Two are used for WVO filtration, two for biodiesel.

I'm also creating an atmospheric evaporator out of a 275 gallon tote bin. This will aid in drying the biodiesel.
