I know you guys might get tired of these type of threads, but I figure I'll start a specific product vs. product as I cant make up my mind, plus I don't really know anyone else personally with a 7.3 that has either of these two.

Sometime in the spring of the upcoming year I plan on getting either an EZ or the Evo. Let's not bring up SCT programmers or anything else, just concentrate on these two. Obviously, I can read and figure out the description of each and know what it will do and don't. Let's also set price and install asside, because that won't matter for me. No worry in extended warranties either.

I was originally looking at the EZ because I could mount it under the hood, plugs inline with the ICP sensor, has adjustable power levels with a switch routed to the cab (?). I then came across the Evo on all the vendors websites that I never bothered to look at, the Evo looks like it has a lot more to offer as far as clearing trouble codes, and other fancy features that I probably won't really need, plus I like how it just plugs into the OBD port, an extra screen telling you whats going on is nice as well. They both have an X amount of selectable tunes for power.

Before this, I plan on having a good set of gauges, 4'' turboback, and an intake.

My question is, is this going to come down to personal preference? I don't want a module/programmer that's going to bring too much power through the motor - especially shortening the life of the factory turbo, or putting my stock 4R100 in harms way (60,000 miles). I also like to be able to switch back to stock at any particular time without too much of a hassle.

The "canned" tunes for diesels on modules and programmers, are they really good enough to not worry about any damage from using them? This is, assuming dyno tuning would be the best bang for the buck.

Any other opinions?

I am sure that the EZ only controls the injection oil pressure by tricking the computer into believing the pressure is lower that it actually is. The Evolution has 3 programs that are from mild towing setting to a butt kicking 100 hp. They are probably harder on the drive train than the engine but they will do you good. The canned programs will probably not cause you any problems or harm except you will find yourself with a big smile on your face that will take some time before it goes away. Tires will wear faster than normal.

Tough decision then I guess. I'm just looking for something mild that'll give me a little black smoke and no worries about accelerated motor/drivetrain wear.

Then I would consider other options than the edge products... I know of those that had one and also got the opportunity to rebuild their tranny....

not saying it is prevalent, but have heard that....

I thought about that, but just browsing around I couldn't find another module/programmer/chip that offered a real mild power increase. Pretty much everyone offers the same range of power increases in their programs with tuners or chips.

I like versatility so I'd say go for the evo. As for your tranny. You have a 2001, they are probably the least reliable with the mechanical diode. Mine went at 70,000 while it was still stock. So either one would not do the tranny any favors. Your right foot will determine it's fate.

That is not the fault of Edge. This is typical of someone with a chip/programmer with a heavy foot. I could probably do it without a chip with no problem. Tranny abuse is all about too heavy of a foot.

I'm leaning towards the Evolution myself for how much it can do. I was originally looking at some of Quadzilla's modules.

Mike

I have on '01 with 145,000 miles and so far no work on the trans. ( Knock on wood ) I have always heard about them going out early and keep waiting for some problems. Just lucky I guess.
