Newbie Mistake
As former tire guy myself, I believe that you may have fat fingered the size you put down. The size you have if I'm not mistaken is 285/75R16. This size tire will work fine for your application. However, I would recommend that you go to or stay with a minimum of an 8 ply tire.- KW_Diesel_Man
