Here is some VERY good news :)

8/22/2006 4:07:06 AM Automaker Ford Motor Co. (F) that recently came up with a surprising move of production reduction said on Tuesday that its new 2008 F-Series Super Duty pickup trucks would go on sale in early 2007. Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas, would unveil the new pickup at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on September 28. According to the company, the 2008 F- Series, with 6.4-liter Power Stroke engine has a new advanced diesel particulate filter, which would provide emissions levels that are equivalent to gasoline engines.

Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford said the new engine would displace the current 6.0-liter V-8 engines. It would use high precision, high pressure, common-rail fuel injection system, with piezo-electric injectors that enable ultra precise timing of fuel injection for quietness and better emissions. The new engine also includes a new diesel particulate filter that scrubs black smoke from exhaust gases and periodically cleans itself thorough advanced engine controls, the company noted.

Ford also stated that the new engine will comply with the U.S. regulations that will mandate the availability of ultra low-sulfur diesel fuel across the country from October 2006. As per the company, the new fuel would contain 97% less sulfur than conventional diesel, with the sulfur reduced from 500 parts per million or ppm to 15 ppm. The company said the new fuel is compatible with Ford Super Duty trucks that are already on the road. These trucks include models with the 6.0-liter and 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel engines.

Further, the company said that pricing, fuel economy and engine specifications of the new 2008 F- Series, including power and torque ratings would be available closer to the vehicle going on sale.

How Diesel Engine Benefits?

According to the Diesel Technology Forum, currently available diesels have 80% lower particulate emissions, 70% lower nitrogen oxide emissions and 15% improved fuel consumption, in comparison with the diesel engines of 10 years ago. The U.S. EPA estimates that when the entire U.S. diesel engine fleet has been fully turned over to clean diesel technology by 2030, there would be a reduction of 250,000 tons per year in particulate emissions and a decrease of 4 million tons per year in nitrogen oxide emissions. The diesel engines can also help reduce carbon dioxide emissions as they are able to extract more energy from a given quantity of fuel.

As per the estimate of the U.S. Department of Energy, by 2020, the import of net crude oil can be reduced by 350,000 barrels per day, with a 30% penetration of clean diesel technology in the U.S. vehicle market.

Ford's Diesel Trucks Sale

Ford said annual diesel truck registrations increased to more than 500,000 from about 400,000 vehicles in 2001. In the U.S., the company sold 1.3 million diesel-powered F-Series pickups since 2001. On a yearly basis, the sales of diesel-powered pickup trucks are higher than Chevrolet and Dodge combined, the company noted. Among the total sales of Ford Super Duty trucks, about three-quarters are sold with the Power Stroke diesel. The company also stated that it would continue offering warranty and roadside assistance package for the new Power Stroke engine. The package covers diesel engines for 5 years or 100,000 miles.

July Sales

Ford's July total sales were 34.2% down in the U.S., hurt by sharp declines in sales of most products, particularly trucks. The company sold 241,339 vehicles in July, compared to 366,548 vehicles sold in the year-earlier month. Truck sales for the month dropped 43.8% to 151,944 units from 270,405 units in the year-ago month. The sales of F-Series trucks experienced a fall of 45.6% in July to 68,982 units from 126,905 units in the prior-year month.

Production Cut for Q4, FY06

In a most recent stride towards the company's ‘Way Forward' restructuring plan, Ford, on August 18, slashed its North American fourth-quarter production by 21%, or 168,000 units, compared to the year-ago quarter. The company also cut its previously announced third-quarter production by 20,000 units. Earlier, the company projected production of 670,000 vehicles in the third quarter, including 255,000 cars and 415,000 trucks.

For the full-year 2006, the company now expects to produce 3.048 million vehicles at its North American assembly plants, which includes 1.134 million cars and 1.914 million trucks. This forecast reflects a 9% drop from 2005 production levels.

The revised production plan is expected to reduce the supply of several models and lessen pressure on sales incentives and dealer inventory carrying costs. The plan also assumes lower industry sales of light trucks and truck-based sport utility vehicles, as high gasoline prices are expected to push the demand for more fuel-efficient passenger cars and crossovers.

Ford's ‘Way Forward' plan aims to bring profits by 2008 by eventually shedding 30,000 jobs and shutting 14 manufacturing facilities.

Analysts' Expectations

Subsequent to Ford's announcement of production cut, several brokerages and analysts downgraded the company as well as the automotive sector, citing a raft of earnings warnings or outright shortfalls in the next two quarters.

According to analyst Christopher Ceraso of Credit Suisse, Ford's production cut may force more Tier II and III suppliers into bankruptcy, putting pressure on stocks across the group. Ceraso expects North American light vehicle production to be 15.4 million units in 2006, down from 15.7 million last year. The analyst also lowered his 2007 production forecast to 15.4 million from 15.6 million.

Ceraso is already assuming about 10% production cut by General Motors in the fourth quarter. The company's important full-size pickup truck launch may make it a little more comfortable carrying some excess inventory, the analyst said.

Based on Ford's revised production plan for the fourth quarter, brokerage Thomas Weisel Partners widened its 2006 loss per share estimate for the company to $0.60 from $0.19 estimated earlier. The brokerage also sees fiscal 2007 loss per share of $0.10, down from the previous estimate of a profit of $0.20.

Stock Movement

F closed Monday's regular trading session at $7.47, down $0.53, on a volume of 70.04 million shares.

My local dealer saw it a few weeks back. Said they would not even let them take out their cell phones (cameras), and when the presentation was over, the veil went back on.

He said it was awesome! Very quiet motor :sweet

He said he knows I'm going to want one.

Can't wait, the curiosity of the secrecy (sp) is killing me!
