my truck in my signature, today I put my hubs in auto 4x4 and pulled my trailers in storage, when I pulled out on to the street, I put my truck in neutral switched the 4x4 selector back to 2wd and just as fast as I put my truck in reverse then heard a grinding sound I quickly put it back in to neutral and got out put the hubs on free and put my truck in drive and all was fine then back into reverse and all is good again. what would have caused the grinding? any thoughts, ive never had any issues with it before and only have 125k on the truck, I don't use 4x4 very much.

The lack of switching to 4 X 4 causes the transfer case to become "lazy". You should switch it in and out of four wheel drive every month. As long as it selected the range you wanted and dis-engaged, you are alright. Exercise to more.
