diesel engine heater

    I just looked for the cord for the engine heater on my 2013 6.7 and there isn't one. I don't normally drive my truck in the winter months but why would Ford not send every diesel out with an engine heater? Are they block heaters or where would one go if I wanted to add it?     Not everyone needs a block heater. It never gets cold enough for one where I live.

    I always thought the heater replaced one of the freeze plugs.

    Well, funny you ask.

    This started back in the 6.0 engines. Every diesel engine built by IH/Navistar (6.9/7.3 IDI, 7.3/6.0/6.4 PSD) had a block heater installed. Even all the way back to the 6.9 IDI in 1983, when Ford put the engine in the truck, they installed and routed the cord to the front into the area behind the bumper. This was standard practice on all diesel engine installs, E and F series into the 6.0 equipped vehicles. The early 6.0's (like my 03 Excursion) also had the block heater cord. Sometime during the 6.0 run, maybe the 05 grille/headlight change, Ford changed the policy. If the vehicle was not sold into a "cold" environment (not sure what the Ford official definition of cold is) then it would not receive a block heater cord. However, if you wanted a block heater cord and weren't in a "cold" environment, you could buy one from the parts department, as and accessory for $90. Or goto an IH/Navistar dealer and buy one from them for $25-30.......

    they tuck the cord really good up behind the passenger side tow hook if yours has one.

    I would not worry too much about it. They will start down to -40. We get a lot of that here and the 2 I have owned have never missed.

    Really? Maybe you need to do some maintenance.
    My dinosaur 7.3 starts. A little Smokey, but starts right up.

    It doesn't get below freezing around here (30's to 40's) but my Rig sure likes starting on a warm engine.. It's quiet and the cab is nice and warm when I get in... Just-Sayin.. CROZ..

    Really...used to be good to 0 to -10 range, although plugging it in is best. I think it's a combo of the fuel, the tired but all working glow plugs, the old but still buzzing injectors. Batteries aren't new but solid, no corrosion anywhere. The only other thing different is I put in a new starter and it cranks faster, which should be a help, but I've 'let go' of the switch a tad too early at least twice this winter and missed my chance to catch the fire so to speak. But now my block heater cord is fixed and it fires right up. Without it, not reliable at all at or below around zero F.
