Does "green" coolant have to be green?

I had the radiator flushed and filled today. All new hoses, new 203* thermo and housing. I told the shop to use the green and use the additives.

When I picked it up they said the shop where they bought the additives said my truck didnt need it because it doesn't have "wet sleeves" - whatever the hell that means. So they didnt put any in.

Now, before I put any in I have a two part question -
-- I looked and the fluid in the bottle is not green anymore. It is a sort of yellowish gold color (I told them not to use ext. life coolant) so is there "green" coolant that is not really green? If not, how can I determine (short of calling them) if this is ECL or not?

-- If this is truly "green" coolant, should I go ahead and add the additive? I assume so but wanted to run it past the experts. I am assuming this is not ECL since they actually bought the bottle of additive but just didnt pour it in.

:dunno

Thanks, as always.

sleeves are replaceable combustion liners you can have replaced instead of hning out the cyclinder walls, 7.3 is not one of em
your cylinder is a part of teh block its nt removable lik ein larger engines.
they are full of crap "wet sleeves" well i geuus they are wet cause coolant is all around em in the water passages, but they arent real wet sleeves

"Solid Block: The solid-block engine has a cast-poured block with the cylinders machined from the parent casting.

Wet Sleeve: International Truck & Engine Corp. (formerly Navistar International) invented the premium wet-sleeve design for mid-range diesel engines. Its wet-sleeved engines ."..

so what about the coolant I see? Is the true color anything significant? I told them to use green and I did not get any argument so I have no reason other than color to suspect they did not follow my request.

Can "green" be another color?

Well you need to see the bottle of what they used to find out exactly what they used. With todays various coolants you need to see the spec on the bottle. What Richard posted is what I use at the moment with DCA4 I think as the additive.

I don't know if there is a low silicate ethylene glycol coolant that isn't green but it's a high possibility there is. But you still need the SCA, look in your manual if you have it and take it to them for them to read. Any diesel needs the additive!

But if they used a HOAT based product you won't need the additive and it's a ELC.

You need to see the spec on the bottle!
