New here as well. First 4x4 truck and first diesel. Are you ready for some dumb questions? <that was the first one. the second is how do i know if my 4x4 is working? The third is my 4x4 locks on front wheels-do I have to lock them in even in 4x4 high, 4x4 low? If someone can just explain to me how they work. I put it in 4x4 hih last snow we got and didnt seem to make a difference. I have a 2003 f250 6.0 diesel. thanks in advance

welcome !

share w/ us if you have ESOF (electronic shift on the fly) 4x4 or
the lever on the floor ?

ESOF:
the switch on the dash selects the transfer case (on or off) and the
gear range (high or low) to run the front drive-shaft.

the switch on the dash also runs a vac. pump that activates the
auto-lock hubs (when theyre set to the "auto" position on the front
wheel hubs).

if there is a problem locking the hubs by vacumm then you can get
out of the truck and turn the hub selection <knob> to LOCK...this will
lock the front wheels TO THE FRONT DRIVESHAFTS.

on the manual 4x4 (selecter in the floor) you must ALWAYS get out
of the truck to lock the wheels (that is to say there are no auto hubs
when you have a manual transfer case selection in the floor).

typical symptoms (or ways to know that youre in 4x4) is that turning
will be somewhat diffecult, on dry pavement (which no one would recommend)

tells more about your truck, auto/manual tranny, ESOF ?
itll sound strange but is your a/c heat vent working ok ? (if there is a vac. seal
leak @ the 4x4 hubs the system will default to defrost)

Thanks for the info. Its an ESOF/auto. The a/c heat vent is working ok. Do I have to do anything special if I need to run 4x4 low. (if I slide off road in ditch and need to get out?). Thanks again.

4hi can be selected <SAFELY> at 50/55mph (check the owners manual)
or slower.

4lo requires the truck to be 1) in park or neutral and 2) foot on the
brake before....only under those conditions will the transfer case select 4lo

1. welcome

2. i have (had) same symptoms. try recommendations listed above. if a/c seems fine and does not jump around from floor to vent to defrost-that is probably fine. however, mine went out (hubs). my esof to dash lite seemed to operate fine however it wouldn't disengage or engage (i could get out and manually lock in 4 hi tho. took shop 10 min. to replace for free-cuz they were just replaced in june. now, while on dry pavement at a full turn tires would bind which is how i new i had a problem. switching hubs took care of that.........until i got home that nite and tried to switch into 4hi. i got nuttin. they tell me it could be the solenoid on the passenger fender going bad(cause it is intermitant) or it could be the wheel bearings. they wanted $800+ to tear down and inspect and replace to SEE if it would correct the problem. i told them 'don't wait up, i'll call you" on that one. they said it is a $48 solenoid if i needed to replace it. but that too is not a guarantee on a fix. gotta love it when they have no clue. so for now (til we get more snow) and i can check it i will wait.
sorry for the long babble. just want to inform as best as possible
