Question Popping out of 4 wheel drive

We drove up the Corova, NC beach with 9 people in my X 2 weeks ago when she popped out of 4 wheel drive and I almost got stuck. I put the selector on 4 wheel low and it went back into 4 wheel high. What problems should I look for on this automatic system? Is it vacuum controlled or electric?

vacuum hubs, electric t-case sleector. i have heard of the electric motor losing its full range of motion or freezing completely if it hasnt been used for some time.

Sounds like the shift motor on the transfer case. They are know to fail quite a bit.
