shifting problem

My tranny is shifting wierd and the tow light on the gear shifter is flashing. Sometimes the truck downshifts and other times it falls out of gear, once the light starts flashing it seems to shift ok.

Does anyone know the problem?

what year truck do you have? need some more info about the truck....should beable to scan for codes....
