I have read a lot of threads about shimming the FPR and I do not understand it any better than before. I have read mixed reports of need/benefit.

I have not yet looked to see if my 97 350 has the bosche disk that would indicate it is the CA compliant model but will tonight. My truck was built in September of 97, which according to posts, should indicate it already has the upgraded FPR (I also havent hit it with the guage yet to see the pressure).

My question is, if that disk is there, do I already have split shot injectors and the upgraded FPR stuff so that shimming it is unnecessary? What will it tell me if the disk is NOT there?

Along with that, what would I want that pressure to be?

Yes, a lot of questions at once but thanks!

I have heard thatif you have split shots in a 97 the decal on the passenger valve cover will not be black and white, if memory serves correct it would be blue and white.

I understand how to do it. I was more concerned with whether I already have the upgraded fpr and how to tell. I just checked and I do not have the bosch part under the turbo pedestal and the decal on the valve covers (assuming you meant the IH Navistar sticker) is black and white. I assume that means no split shots or stronger FPR. So, unless one of you tells me not to, I think I will make this improvement in the near future.

Not sure what the the updated look like look like. Have you taken it apart, does it look like the one in the picture, have you checked your fuel pressure to see if your getting 65 to 75 already? I did this mod cause I was only hitting 40 at idle. and yes it is the IH navistar.

I havent taken anything apart yet but I bought it new so it is factory whatever it is. From what I have read, you can determine whether you have the CA version by looking for that black BOSCH disk under the turbo. It is apparently required with split shots. It is some sort of dampener. I dont have it so I must not have the splits. I dont have a gauge yet so havent checked pressure. I guess that will tell me everything I need to know. I looked around town yesterday and the cheapest gauge for the schrader valve is $37. I may wait to stop by a shop I use and see if they will check it for me for less.

Did you order the Ford kit or did you use the BB method?

I used the screw and the brass nut method, it was only 35 cents for a stainless screw and the brass nut. The part # for the international california regulator in the link above is 1825854C1 somtimes they are cheaper then ford
