I haven't been following the 6.4L news as I am not in the market for a new truck so I don't know if this has been covered.

A buddy of mine is shopping for a new truck and when he looked at a new 08 he was in shock. He tells me that you cannot even see the fan belts yet there is apparently two serpentine belts in there somewhere? He talked to a service tech and he said that there is very little that can be done on the engine without pulling the cab. According to him you have to pull the cab just to change the glow plugs? If there is no room to do anything under the hood then would a guy that likes to do his own tinkering really want one?

I don't know how tight the 6.4 is, but I do know that the 6.0 is very tight in a van. The dash is right over the turbo I mean within an inch. I cant even see the block from under the hood.

In a van down by the river...
I don't know how tight the 6.4 is...

It's VERY tight. When I got to take a peek at the 6.4 the local dealer had in last week, you couldn't really see the ground from the topside of the engine, things were so crammed in under the hood...   It'll be really tough for the DIY guys to do anything major on that engine unlike the 7.3 and, to a lesser degree, the 6.0 PSD's. I don't plan on replacing my 7.3 for a VERRRRRRRRRRY long time and when that engine is shot, I'll repower with a 5.9 Cummins before I would begin to think about a 6.4 (or whatever generation of PSD is out by then).

I talked to a close friend's FIL on Sunday who is a front end specialist at a local dealership. He said that changing the power steering pumps on a 6.0 was a nightmare. Then he said he spent about 15 minutes checking out the new front end and said he never was able to even locate the power steering pump. He also mentioned the need for cab off repairs.

I drove one of these new marvels over the weekend. You can't see the ground from anywhere. If you thought it was tight under the hood of the 6.0, wait till you see this. Its tighter than a frog's a**, and thats water tight. The truck seems tighter inside as far as leg room. The storage on top of the dash is history. The exhaust tip is awful. Looks like a galvanized lobster claw. The ride is great. The engine is too quiet for me. As quiet as a Duramax..if not quieter. The best part is the pricing structure. I was testing a F450 dually 4 by 4 with all the toys, except the King Ranch package. $60,800 before tax. Can be optioned up to over 65 without too much trouble.

You should see the chevy exhaust tip. It is shaped like a bow tie and looks very stupid.

Ah-DUH... look at the market they're after... they still think the Big #3 is gonna come out of the pits sometime. They're worse than Elvis fans! :tounge

yeah, these exhaust tips suck for both ford and chevy, and its crazy that they are actually using them along with everything else in the exhaust to bring it to todays standards, fuggin crazy, friend of mine is a GM tech and went to school about a month ago for the new durmax and saw the new setup with the particulate filter and stupid exhaust tip, and he asked the GM guy "what the hell is up with that"??? his response was "you shoulda seen it before that!! "....lol, crazy ****.
