code readers and 99 f350

I tried a buddys code reader on my f 350 srw and it said no codes stored even though the lite was on so I called the tech line and the guy said that 99 f350 were not odb2 compliant because it was over 8000# gross weight does any one know this is fact or was the guy on the phone blowing smoke? Also how do you get the codes off a 99 f350 if so?

You will have to find a code reader that will read Ford trucks. AutoEnginuity - OBD2 Scan Tool - Professional PC and PDA Diagnostics is one that will. You will have to install it on a laptop to really use it.

there's a difference between the "global" or generic OBD2 codes, and manufacturer specific.

If your buddy's code reader said "no codes found," it's not capable of reading the manufacturer's ones.
