I Bought my truck about 2 years ago. I noticed the truck had a loud engine noise when I bought it, but wasn't too worried about it. But it seems more and more people (mostly mechanics) are telling me that it sounds bad. It is extreamly loud at idle (nocking or clanking) and seems to quite down when accelerating or raising the rpm's. I think I have eliminated it to one of three things, tourqe converter, transmission bearings, or rear engine bearings. There are no oil leaks or trans. fluid leaks (not even residue on the underside of the vehicle) I removed the flywheel cover about a week ago and noticed what may be a slight shimmy in the flywheel (or maybe it just appears to be one with the shaking of the engine). I was wondering if anyone has ever had any similar symptoms, or would know what it might be.

Thanks!

PS it sounds like an old school bus with the T444E.

I think the 99's have always been distinctively louder than newer 7.3's I can hear a noticeable difference and I've never heard of anyone have problems with it, rather thats just the way it is

You might be hearing the infamous "engine cackle." If so........a whole lot of band width has been consumed over the years cussing and discussing this issue.

Did the noise get louder since USLD was introduced? Try using a 20% blend of biodiesel (B20). Mine runs quieter on bioD than on #2 (which I don't use anymore).

I'm with Tbar on this one.

Although Richard has a point with the bio-fuel. My truck quieted down A WHOLE BUNCH when I switched from ULSD to B20

Early 99's are well known for TC issues. The "goes away under acceleration" is the give away. That's where I put my money.

On my 2000 X 7.3 I used to have neighborhood kids run down to the street when they heard me, thinking I was the bus. I used to have fun in the morning messing with the little stinkers. When I installed the HX crossover mod ($45) it quited mine down alot, The Ford mechs. even asked me what I did. But with the ULSD I add lot's of Lucas since I can not get Bio anymore.

my money is on the torque convertor. i had the same problem. the noise goes away when the TC locks up. you hear it come back when coming to a stop when the TC unlocks. at idle it is deafening.
