Hey all,

i purchased a 1999.5 F350 last week. It has a number of nice upgrades and was owned by an older man that traveled with his fifth wheel. Banks power pack, gauges, billet torque converter (Banks), AFE intake, etc.

Anyway, in looking through the records, it was time for a transmission flush- I followed the instructions in the FAQ and added a TON of Redline D4 (7.5 gallons to be precise).

Anyway- the truck also has Mag-Hytec trans and rear covers.

What was impressive (I think) was during today's 250 mile run from Reno to San Francisco, the transmission temperature never budged from the low pin (140 degrees) with the exception of the couple of minutes I sat in a drive through line. I kept it in gear to make sure the gauge was still working.

I was empty, but did climb from 4200 to 7800 and never saw any heat at all. I believe the additional capacity really helps. The pan holds an additional 7.5 quarts over stock.

Maybe this is normal, but with 200k on this truck (stock transmission minus the banks billet converter) the trans seems like new.

Welcome! I'd say you got a real keeper. Only thought to add is that once you get that extra 2 gallons hot, it'll be hot even longer! I guess you must have an aux cooler?

By contrast, 10d ago we ran out from central Illinois to Spokane WA and back, 6 people, 120 gal diesel, and luggage -- i.e. no real load -- and on the flats in SD on the way out it, with air temperature about 97F, my tranny temp was 210 if we ran it 80 mph for extended periods. Next day in the mountains it also got pretty warm and the coolant temp (at the outlet of the thermostat) was 215-225F. Usually, the tranny temp is well under 100F more than outside air temp. (So I checked the records and sure enough, overdue for an oil change). I did have an insect screen over the grill and it was plugged up awful so we removed it and that gave us back 10F the coolant and even more on the tranny -- the screen was probably wadded up on the tranny cooler down behind the license plate bracket.

It was a hot ride out there for sure, but I've never seen my coolant or tranny temps up that high before and am usually working to heat it up in the winter. I'd need an aux tranny cooler if I planned on doing that more often, I guess!

I added a Tru-Cool Transmission cooler when I had the Tranny beefed up.
Normal temps 140F~160F and up to 200F towing 30ft 5th wheel in summer on hills.
I added it in series , retaining the stock one.... easy to do...Happy with results!
