Saying good bye to my 7.3 for 6.7

Every time I want to buy a new truck I can't justify it. The 7.3 just keeps going.....
It's been stolen twice, broken into about 7 times, 4 girlfriends, one kid, one paint job, 8 states. Like family almost.
I read good & bad about the 6.7L and No one seems to want to say yes, it's the next 7.3L.
Maybe I'm just talking myself out of buying a new truck.

I don't have a lot of diesel experience, but I think the 6.7 is pretty good. Yeah, I've had a couple sensors die, but it hasn't left me stranded. (Knock on wood) And that's what really matters to me.

I had a 2000 F250 with the 7.3. Drove it for about 2years. Great truck, but there were little things that would bug me. And it had the extra cab. I finally sold it early last year and bought a 2011 F350 with the 6.7. Night and day, IMO. The 6.7 has so much more power and mine has the crew cab. Every time I get in I think “man, I am so glad I got this truck”. And it tows great. No looking back for me...

I had a 2016 F-250, that after 1yr & 8 months of faithful service, developed a wiring harness issue that would result in the truck throwing every imaginable code, while running, but the second you shut it down, it wouldn't start again for a day or two. Ford reckons it was a one of the pin connections that must have retracted due to either heat or vibration. They had a Ford engineer come take a look at it after 3 weeks in the shop and they claimed to have "wired around the faulty pin connector" and fixed the issue. After I was offshore for two weeks, I had the wife go start the truck for me and the batteries were completely dead. I figure they had drained due to the patch that the engineer had the technician wire in. I took it back to the dealership and they couldn't find any cause for the battery draining and replaced the FoMoCo batteries and sent me on my way. I traded in the 2016 for a 2017.....I still love these trucks. I am sure that was an isolated incident as there wasn't any other cases that the technician could find in his trouble-shooting matrix before calling down an engineer. Bottom Line: the 6.7 is a hoss and I can't complain about the motor or fit and finish of the vehicle. The 2017 is hands down, the best truck on the road. Just my .02

I know the feeling. I always tell people you did good when you enjoy driving all of your vehicles. I can go from my Cobra to my truck and be happy either way.

It seems that I've seen a lot of cabs of newer Ford Diesels hanging from the ceiling at my local garage. I'll stick with my 2001 7.3 till it or I finally give out completely.

I've had a 2014 F250, and now have a 2017 F350 DRW; both long bed, crew cab, XLT. Absolutely love these trucks. I'm not very mechanical and new to diesels with the F250, so I can't say a lot about the guts of the engine. All I can say is pulling 12K pound, 38' 5th wheel through the Sierra mountains is a dream. I have yet to take a grade under 60 mph unless for traffic, never for lack of power. Descents are no problem with the exchuste break and the intelligence of the truck to down shift for byou on grades. The only thing I have to think about driving in the mountains is watching the cheating the trailer does on the twisting roads. The best part of our trips is driving the truck!!!

I know the feeling. My 99 7.3 has 695,000 km's on it and still runs good. By far been the most economical $$ per kilometer vehicle I've ever owned. All I've done to the engine is 1 injector, new glow plugs, new oil cooler & HPOP seals. Few alternators and a couple of starters, and had to replace the fuse box a few years ago because of windshield leak over time corroded it out. Still doesn't burn oil and has lots of power. Still running on original U-joints too - I've never ever seen U-joints last that long and they're still tight.

I finally gave in and got a new truck 2 years ago, but I went with the F150 3.5 EB. I don't tow my travel trailer that much any more and just could not justify the cost of a new diesel, as much as I liked the 6.7 when I drove one. I'm very happy with the F150 Super Crew and that 3.5 eco-boost goes like a bat out of hell, has a ton of back seat leg room in comparison to the 250 or 350 and pulls my 24' trailer as good as the 7.3 did, but takes a real hit on mileage compared to the 7.3.

I still love the 7.3 though, but reluctantly just put it up for sale. If I had the time, money and shop to do it in, my dream would be to do strip it down to frame and to a total restoration on it and bring it back to showroom condition - be a nice way to start out my semi retirement years and the end product would be worth it!

I have heard great things about the 6.7.
But I have also heard that you have to drive for a minimum of 1 hour per week at speed to ensure the emission system functions properly, else the truck will shut down.
Also understand that you must recharge the urea (??) for this system regularly.

Not my personal experience, but what mechanics have said and I have read. Are these true? Sounds like a PIA compared with my '01 7.3.
