Currently, I own a '99 F250 7.3L that's on it's way out, and I'm going to look at '01 F250 7.3L today. I looked at the blue book for it, and the price dropped significantly from shortbed to longbed.. wondering if there is something that happens with these trucks specifically that is the reason for this price drop.

That's because everyone wants the shortbed for their lifted mallcrawlers. Lol

That's kinda the impression I got from some of what I was reading.. but, whatever, shortbed is a deal breaker for me and it's cheaper, I'll take it!

You're saying the shortbed is coming up cheaper?
I thought you meant the other way around. Lol

That is interesting to know.
I have a 2001 F350 long bed and we love it. Much smoother riding than short bed and easier towing the 5th wheel (standard hitch, no sliding).
That said, forget Starbucks and other high brow parking lots with this 22 ft long, 7 ft tall beast (unless you just love turning the wheel and shifting).

Exactly! We just totaled our beloved 2011 F250 Short Bed and opted to replace it with a 2016 F350 8' bed. It is a monster but does pull our 35' Solitude 5er better. By better, I mean, more stable, better brakes, smoother when pulling, love the B&W stationary hitch, etc. We "quit" driving in the city as it is too damn cumbersome in parking lots! Our F-350 is about 3" taller than our F-250. We also replaced the stock fuel tank with a Titan 65 gallon in it's place. Much better!

How far can you make it with the 65 gallon tank?

depends upon what we are pulling but our worst milage is about 10mpg so we are over six hundred with some to spare. If we are running around without a tow, we see the computer go past 900 miles range on a full tank!
