'02 fuel pump pumping air bubbles

Diesel newby here, had the truck for 3 months, truck wouldn't start, was "advised" the problem was clogged filters in the tank sending unit, dropped tank, filter housing empty, seller said he removed them because they clog up easily "don't need them". Small orange rubber joker-valve bad, replaced it. Needed 15 gallons of fuel before the filter can would fill with no bubbles. Now, if it sits overnight, the fuel level in the filter can drops down far enough that it won't start without a re-fill from the pump. Help appreciated!

Sounds like a check valve went bad somewhere. If there isn't one external in the line then its probably in the pump itself.

Or when you put everything back together a connection didn't get seated correctly.

Dropped the tank again, pulled the sending unit, yes I re-assembled it wrong the first time, it was sucking air from about 5 inches from the bottom of tank. That explains why it took 15 gallons to stop pumping bubbles in the filter canister. I'm not sure how that would effect the fuel level in the filter canister dropping overnight, one problem at a time. Putting it all back together tomorrow

Look up the hutch and harpoon modifications for in tank and pre-pump.. Get rid of that mixing valve.

Yes to this post. This will solve so many problems and you will be happy with the results. The biggest result is how much quieter the engine is after the Hutch Mod.
