Start/No Start then Start/No Start. Not Fuel Filters...

To start I have a 2004 F350 Dually with the 6.0L Diesel.

I was at the car wash last week and shut it off to pay so the person and I can hear each other. I went to start it and it would not start. I ended up pushing it out of the way and tried a couple of times and after about 30 minutes the engine started turning over faster and faster until it started.

I drove it home and parked it, got the Ford Fuel Filters and did fuel filters yesterday. Primed it 5 times, key on, key off. It started right up so I let it idle for about 10 minutes and when I pressed the throttle it died and refuses to start again.

Today I opened up the cap on the filter under the truck just to make sure no cracks or something that may be causing low fuel pressure. Closed it up and moved to the small one under the hood. I always read to have someone help watch when I turn the key on because it will spray all over the place or fill the small upper bowl so quickly I would have fuel everywhere.

This was not the case. It cleared the air and took forever to fill the small bowl. So slow that I got out of the truck and stood there with time to walk back to the cab to shut the key off.

Is the fuel pump failing and not providing enough pressure to start and I got lucky last week at the car wash? Are the batteries going bad and not providing enough juice to build pressure to start? I do not feel it us a filter issue because it did it before I messed with changing filters.

I have 180k miles on the truck with original fuel pump. I ordered a new one because I cannot think of anything else that it could be. Any ideas or confirmation of my diagnosis?

All help is greatly appreciated!!! Feeling frustrated with this truck...

Sounds to me like your fuel pump, or something fuel related (fuel pickup, lines, blocked filters, etc.). Any of my experiences with my 6L filling the fuel bowl only took seconds, and ended with fuel everywhere, like you described. Normally I’d say check your fuel pressure but obviously the pressure low. Also on priming the system after changing filters, I have never had to cycle the ignition more than once.

I can’t see it being any problems with the batteries, or voltage as it clearly has enough voltage/ amps to crank for extended periods of time.

What is the fuel level in your tank?

Keep an eye on cranking voltage. It shouldn't get below 10.5 volts. If it does, you can damage the FICM.
Also, just be aware that you need 150+ cranking rpms to start.

Also, just be aware that you need 150+ cranking rpms to start.
Roger that. Thanks for the info. I was waiting fir the part that just arrived last night. Sorry took so long to respond. I have a lot of other things going on along with this mess.

Tank is full. Fresh tank on the day it first happened.

Thanks for the reply. This forum doesn't get a lot of traffic, so I didn't want your thread to "fall into a crack".

Did you order a pump by itself or the entire HFCM (which is more expensive and it includes the pump)?

More than likely you will fix it with a new pump.

I ordered the entire unit. What is in it is the original and figured I would just do the while things while I was under the truck. The new units dumped the heater plug and upgraded a little with metal filter cap and all.

So far it is not looking promising. I replace the entire unit. Got the new wiring connected. Opened the upper filter lid and it flooded quickly ones the air cleared. I have the batteries charging overnight hopefully that helps. I tried to fire it off and it still would not start. I will double check oil in the morning and not sure what else to check. I sure hope it is not the high or low pressure oil pump(s)... The fuel flow has definitely increased though.
