    4x4 tries to pop into gear while driving

    is it making a fairly loud clicking noise? If so it is probably the locking hub(s) going bad on you. I had it happen to me with stock hubs. You can pull them to verify, but I would not recommend driving very far without them installed.

    I have been looking into an oil bypass filter, and can't decide. So far the FS 2500 or the Amsoil setup looked good. Is anyone using one? Any sugestions?:dunno

    I should have clarified my explination a bit more. BJS is right. I was referring to engine braking being hard on em'. One truck we pulled a gear vender out of, hauled a heavy trailer a lot, and had an exhaust brake. Maybe if you don't haul often, and don't have an exhaust brake it may work...

    I have installed one before, all it really does is lock up the converter at or above 1600 rpm, when your foot is NOT in the throttle. It is intended to be used in conjunction with an exhaust brake.

    I work at a shop that has installed and removed a few of them due to repeated failures. If you haul, they do not hold up to deceleration. basically they are not designed to take a load on the backside of the gears.

    Big Joe - Fuel filter gets changed every 15k, and air filter is (or was) clean during time of tests. 3.73 gears. Living in California, I'm not too sure if we get winter blend here. The tires are BFG All Terrain's and I'm not sure that they are known for fuel mileage to begin with...

    Transfer case not engaging with dash switch

    If there is no 4 x 4 indicator light coming on, it has nothing to do with the locking hubs. Yes the stock hubs suck, but the real problem will likely be the actuator motor on the t-case. They go bad from time to time. Greg

    Good advice, one step further would be to put the test light on the starter terminal side of the solenoid (big post) to see if 12v is getting to the starter during the no-start condition.

    In my opinion, if I am in a situation where I NEED 4 w/d. I get out and lock the hubs anyway. I do not trust that the vacuum system will keep them locked when it matters. :eek:

    Ditto, sounds like the vss on top of the rear diff. The tubing at the front hub is likely the vacuum line that locks the front hub when 4wd is engaged.
