why the short bed ? youll be getting a 10gal smaller tank !

Well nothing is set in stone, like i may not go with 4x4 on the fly. To answer your question I was hopping for a better turn radius (short bed being better than long bed) and just in general the better manuverablity.

I WAS going to say i was going to upgrade to the Transfer Flow 60 gal fuel tank but i see that too is only for the long bed (applies to both extended and crew cabs) where the shot bed you only get a 46 gal fuel tank from Tranfer flow.

I also just found out that i would be taking delivery of the truck late jan, after the incentives expire so we might as well re-add the $3,000 onto the price tag.

ok not to hi-jack BUT...

the 05+ truck turns better (since it ditched the leaf springs up
front) because the wheel can pivot around the coil spring front
suspension.

these things are LONG as they are...whats 2 more feet ;)

the cost of that 60 gallon transfer flo tank is BIG bucks when
you figure it based on X cost just to gain 30 odd gallons.

if you go w/ a long bed you get 10 gallons more from the start
*AND* you can use the 2 xtra feet of bed to add a CHEAPER
(and possibly LARGER, than the 30 added gallons the transferflow
will provide).

for about 400 bucks you can add an inbed tank that gives you 35 gallons
and only consumes 9inches of bed depth...or you add say 100gallons or
MORE (and still save money over the cost of a transferflow)

Can you tow a 5th wheel and have a tool box in the bed with a short bed?

others will confirm, but i dont think so...Ive heard SOME
5er owners complain about their "RANGE" (due in part to
the towing AND the small tank)...theyve also said
because of the 5er & the shorter bed that they do NOT
have the room to add an in-bed aux/transfer tank

It looks like transfer flow offer a lpw profile toolbox/fuel tank let see if i can get the link to work:
40 Gallon Toolbox Tank

The dealer also offered to send me some info on fuel tank/tool box combos that hey have installed before and said that they would clear a 5th wheel. I assume that you just need to make sure they dont stick up above the top of the bed am i correct?

yup....the tank has to clear the LOWEST point of the
5er.

there are some interesting in bed tank options for short bed/5er towing...
but NONE of 'em are cheap.

when you look at the cost of a transfer-flow (factory replacement)
and work the priced based on a COST PER ADDITIONAL GALLON (over
the factory tank size) they are bordering on REDICULOUSLY PRICED.

when you figure 1500 bucks for an additional 10g (transferflow brand)
verses the price of the in bed tanks (that you can take to your next truck)
in the range of 400-600 bucks for 39-90gal additional it seem like
a no brainer to me.

Yeah you can but they recommend you not have a tool box higher than 4" above the bed rail, so you'd need to look for a low profile like the Challenger Box Cabela's sells
