working properly. Cannot get the 4x4 to engage....motor is not turning. Just put it in today, made sure everything was connected right but will not engage. Could this be an electrical problem?? Hubs are in automatic which is where book says they should be. HELP!!!!........:dunno

not a lot of info to go on here...

what motor are you talking about ? the vac. pump on the fender ?
or the transfer case engagement ?

what indications do you have that your not engaging 4wd ?

Okay, it's the transfer case motor underneath the truck for 4x4 drive engagement. My truck is ESOF. Hubs are in auto position which is where book says they should be. Followed operating instructions, no indicator lite to tell me truck is in 4x4. Indicator lite does work. Truck is definitely not going into 4x4 because I would feel it when driving.

ok we have to 1/2 the problem...is it the hubs or the xfer case that
isnt engaging...

does it go into 4lo or 4hi ?

remember 4lo can only be selected if the truck is in netural & your foot
must be on the brake...you could have a bad brake interlock
switch (like i do)

the dash light is ONLY an indications of the selection of the xfer case...
its not proof that the hubs are locked.

lets figure out if the xfer case is the issue 1st...if thats not the problem
then we can begin looking at the hubs & the vac. pump.

Not sure.....had my hand on the xfer box motor and did not feel any vibration to indicate that it was working. Hubs are set on "automatic".

Neither.

Yup did that and no indication of 4 lo. Also tried 4 hi while driving and no 4x there either, at least no light and I know I would feel it if it was in 4 wheel drive. I've had other 4 wheel drive vehicles and I could always tell when I was in 4 wheel drive, whether it was low or hi.

Should I try moving the hubs into the "lock" position or that wouldn't really matter???

shouldnt matter...the action of the vac/pump & hubs wont
matter to the xfer case.

if the hubs are not sealing (vac) or the pump (vac) isnt working
the xfer case will still go in (and out) of 'gear'....are you getting
a dash indication that the xfer box is in hi OR lo ?

No indication whatsoever. 4x4 lite comes on momentarily when I start the truck but that's it.

I had the truck checked at the Ford agency a while back because of this problem and they told me I needed a new shift motor for $800 which is why I didn't go back. Bought a new shift motor for a whole lot less. Easy enough to install but something ain't workin' right......

leave it to a dealer to try and rape ya for the most expensive part...i 'spose
they could have said it whas the xfer case itself.

the "flash" of the dash bulb is just a bulb test.

have you checked the plugs on the module behind the glove box ?

you been having any problems getting the truck in GEAR (from park) ?

Especially when the shift motor cost me $140....pretty big savings there I would say IF that's what the problem is/was.

I think they were checked when the truck was at the dealer's but I can do it again.

What kind of problems are you looking at relative to getting the truck into gear from park? Seems to shift okay but what I think and someone a whole lot more knowledgable than me would think could well be two different things... It's tough when you don't know a whole heckuva lot about this kinda stuff. :(
